Dedication

Christian Robinson’s opening dedication is spot on.

Like everyone, I have several artists and their work that I tend to gravitate toward, especially in the world of kidlit. Christian Robinson is one of them. His collage-like style and colorful illustrations speak to me in their details, their simplicity, and their vibrancy. I feel like he gets a lot across with a simple brush (and pencil) stroke.

His latest book? A stroke of genius. A MUCH NEEDED message especially in the time we are living in. Two simple but powerful words: YOU MATTER.

Robinson opens You Matter with a little kid and his/her microscope, starting with the small stuff and cycling through in a poetic way about the things that matter: everything and everyone.

There’s so much said and unsaid with each spread but you can feel it in every word and picture: You matter.

And then Robinson circles back to what he began with: the small stuff. All the little things and big things.

It’s an impressive debut for Robinson as both author and illustrator—if you could argue that this well-established voice in kidlit is having a debut. He may still be considered an author with his wordless picture book, Another. And he’s definitely a co-storyteller as the illustrator for Last Stop on Market Street and Carmela Full of Wishes (both written by Matt De La Pena) and Leo by Mac Barnett and Gaston and Antoinette by Kelly DiPucchio and much more.

One thing is for sure: Robinson continues to win my heart over with You Matter. A great message for kids for any time, but especially in this time of quarantine when we may be feeling a bit disconnected or forgotten.

Did you know that Christian Robinson has a youTube channel? He combines great messages with innovative art projects for kids. This week’s video was particularly poignant as he talks about ANGER and the other feelings that are brimming underneath the surface. A great way to access all the feelings we are having this week everything going on in the world. Plus, who doesn’t love artwork that includes a walrus?
