Doctor Who: The Runaway TARDIS

Bigger on the Inside!

“Everyone gets lonely sometimes.”

I saw a gif of David Tennant the other day. (For those of you who are non-Whovian, David Tennant played the Tenth Doctor on the long-running series, Doctor Who.)

  • What’s it called when u have friends but ur still lonely

  • time lord

You may have seen the POP Classics series that basically has turned favorite television series and films into picture books and board books. They speak to the parents as well as families with a sense of nostalgia as well as delighting in sharing something we loved with our children. Or they are for the superfans. Either way, I got sucked in and finally settled on getting the picture book that featured the Thirteenth Doctor because the Bookworm family are big Doctor Who fans.

The Runaway TARDIS features the 13th Doctor who meets Lizzie when LIzzie decides to run away from her new home. She’s nervous about meeting new people and making new friends. Of course that all changes when she meets the Doctor. The Runaway TARDIS has a cute storyline, complete with Lizzie helping to fix the TARDIS, a great solution between her and the littlest alien friend that she’s met.

There are many picture books that broach the topic of starting school for the first time, but this one is the first one that I’ve come across that deals with starting over at a new school. I think it’s a great segue for many discussions of trying new things. Or, even as it may seem unfathomable, for the transition back to in person school as, yes, I’ve still seen some kids doing this year.

One of my favorite layouts is when LIzzie asks the Doctor, “Do you ever get lonely?” For Whovians, we know the answer to that one. And it will be interesting to see how that’s handled with the 14th Doctor. (NO SPOILERS)

Doctor Bookworm Asks:

The Runaway TARDIS is a great picture book for anyone, but especially for Doctor Who fans. The POP Classics series has a few more fanfiction picture books that I’d like to check out including the Back to the Future and X-Files ones. I guess I’m still a sci-fi/fantasy girl at heart.
